Fruta Feia :: Tempting Us With Ugly Fruit

http://www.frutafeia.pt/projecto

A alguma passaram junto à carrinha amarela?

Have you read the New York Times article "Tempting Europe With Ugly Fruit" ?
And... have you heard about Fruta Feia?
At a time of economic crises for many in the European Union the Ugly Fruit movement is a growing trend. I'm quite happy about that! Why?!
Here's the deal with Ugly Food: regulations in both European Union and the US are based in the mistaken idea that quality is about appearance (standard size, shape, color). Which have no bearing on actual taste and nutrition of the fruit or vegetable in question. Those stringent cosmetic standards are just leading to tons of food waste. Aren’t we taught not to deem internal worth by external appearance? At least, that is what my parents taught me.
Fruta Feia is tempting us with ugly fruit in Portugal! They're saving misshapen fruit and vegetables and selling them at o good price. I just love this project!

A Mágica Máquina de Lavar Roupa :: The Magic Washing Machine

Photos from my apartment in Lisbon: Francisca Figueiredo & Carla Monteiro

Do you have some fun fact about your first house or apartment?
My first apartment, in Lisbon, was a studio with only 35 sqm.
Near Castelo de São Jorge houses are very expensive and if it was not for the location my small studio would have no interest at all. The kitchen had cabinets from the floor to the ceiling and I lived always carrying a ladder in my hands. I spent great times in there but...there was no washing machine! Ya .... ya .... I know. You have to be young and passionate to live like that. The kitchen was so small that the architect decided not to put a washing machine in there. We only value this kind of things when we find ourselves living without them!

Since I'm living in Spain I have a washing machine :P

There is a magic washing machine in my life! Again!
Every time I do laundry I still feel like "Tutti Frutti"!

Lisbon is celebrating St. Anthony. This is the time of the year I miss the most living in Lisbon. All that festivity around us, cheap dinner served by the neighbors on our street. The old ladies fighting for the most beautiful window ornamentation! Hearing all around someone shouting:
"Lisboa éeeeeeeeeee liiiiiiiiinda!
(That means: Lisbon is beautiful!)

Lisboa celebra San Antonio.

I thought about this Deolinda song ..... it's so beautiful and has the spirit of Lisbon's Popular Saints party!

  Hope you enjoy it!

Spanish Music :: El Camarón

<<<  >>>

When I was living in LISBON I returned home very late. I was arriving to Rossio subway station at about 11 pm or half past 11 pm. Lisbon downtown is beautiful every time of day and when I got there late at night I was so tired that the only thing that delighted me was the view, Rossio station, D. Maria II Theatre, the electrics standing at Praça da Figueira.

    Photos: from the web

Despite all that, there was one thing that got me out of my mind! In the most noble part of the city at any time of the day I was approached by gypsies who tried to sell me drugs. Between the subway station and my home they approached me at least four times. Tourists find it a joke! But... for me who lived there, I got those gypsies every day with the same story, several times a day. It tooks a Saint's patience.

Once I approached a policeman who was standing there while they tried to sold me drugs and I asked him if I could make a complaint about that situation and wanted to know why the police sees that everyday and even though they never do nothing to stop Apparently the police can not do anything because those gypsies are so gypsies that they are trying to sell pig in a poke. Every time that they've tried to arrest them, imediatly got to release them because they were trying to sell drugs but actually there were no drug at all. It was just something like tea leaves and chocolate bars.

(Introduction is done ...... here comes the fun fact!)

One of those nights after leaving work I was crossing Rossio on my way home accompanied by my husband, and there came once again a gypsy with the every days phrase"Do you want Ax? Marijuana?". I just wanted to say on the american way"get the fuck off!". But the answer came much more restricted we just said: "NO!!!!"

And ... suddenly the gypsy guy fixed my husband and just said: "Are you el Camarón?!? Yes you are! For sure you are! You're just like him?!? It's you isn't it?"

A web search clarified everything. El Camarón dela Isla is one of the most famous spanish flamenco singers!
It seems like I have his  double living with me at home! hahahahha

Mine doesn't sing but is much more beautiful.

I noticed that everybody tried to spoke in Spanish with Hugo but didn't realize why ..... And now I found the answer.

E a vocês que vos parece?
What do you think?
Sósia ou não sósia?
My husband is his double or not?

Sapatos nas ruas de Lisboa :: Shoes in the streets of Lisbon

                                             Photo: Francisca Figueiredo

These days I was surprised by a strange phenomenon on the streets of Lisbon. Does anyone see anything wrong with this picture?
Two lamps, with a pair of shoes in each one?!? The shoes are hanging around on every street of Lisbon.

The first time I saw something similar was in the movie "Big Fish" from Tim Burton.
Who is spreading shoes through Lisbon
Is there a myth? Was it a bet?

Photos from "Big Fish", Tim Burton.

Each time I discover a new pair of shoes on the streets of Lisbon, I get curious and smile.

Why shoes?

Roupa nas janelas Lisboetas :: Clothing in the windows of Lisbon

Photo: Francisca Figueiredo (left), Matilde Rebelo (right)

"Lisbon's windows" full of drying clothes are part of the city's image. It was something that never crossed my mind to extend my clothes in the street.

When we moved into Lisbon's historic center we didn't know it would eventually be inevitable.

We have the luxury of living with a privileged view, the luxury of being in the most cosmopolitan and beautiful part of the city, the luxury of leaving home going to work and having an illusion that we are on vacation in a sunny and beautiful city.
I initially ignored the possibility of extending my clothing in the windows. I first tried the bathroom. Finally, I realized that the bathroom is too small to have drying clothes in there. Then, I tried not even washing cloths just not to put mu cloths in the windows.
Until ... I first adventured to put my clothing on the windows ropes. Nobody can imagine the stories that followed that. No one.
First at all, I'm like most portuguese women, a short one. For me it is a challenge to reach the ropes of our windows, it is impossible, I need some short hops to get there. And at one of my valiant attempts I found an old woman who stopped on his way and stared at me laughing, and then said:
                                            - "My dear, you better get a stool!"
Everyone in the neighborhood has flowers in the windows, I think beautiful, wonderful and I always admired especially the flowers of the rooftop. One day, after a full day of beautiful sunshine to dry my clothes, I see water falling and ... It wasn't rain! Someone was watering the flowers in the windows. I thought it would have been a distraction and said nothing. But this did not happen once, not twice, not three times. It happened every sunny day. Then I set up a strategy and more or less at that time it used to happen I jumped into the street to see who it was and give him a warning. To my surprise it was just my roof's neighbor, the one with the pretty flowers! This just proves that when you are on the top, it's hard to look for the ones who are down. It was officially my first haggling at the neighborhood.
As I gained confidence and I got used to this facet of Lisbon's life, I began to extend the clothes in the evening and at the morning before going to work collected them. Until the day . . . that I stretched Hugo's T-shirts and the next morning we no longer needed to collect them. Someone stole them. One more progress, I learned that we only should extend laundry by the day light, when the old ladies of the neighborhood are eyeing the cloths.

Lisbon is clothing in the windows. . . I already lived it beyond the images on the post-cards.

Summer weekend in October :: Fim-de-semana de verão em Outubro

    Photo: Francisca Figueiredo

Tenho andado desaparecida do Blog.

<<< >>>

I've been small bloguer these days. The summer continues in Portugal and during the weekend I've been at the beach, biking, having lunch with family, dining with friends and enjoying outdoor concerts in old Lisbon neighborhoods. Not that much time left for blogging.
This year it looks like we'll have summer temperatures up to Christmas. Portugal is undoubtedly a sunny tropical country in southern Europe. With so many low-cost companies
flying to Lisbon (easyjet , ryanair) you can enjoy some sunbathing days during the winter and you don't need to spend that much money for that. Actually you can even choose between: Lisbon, Faro or Oporto.

These days you can find things like this piano in Lisbon's neighborhoods. We came home and for our surprise there was a piano in the middle of a street, just in front of our house. We asked why was it there? Someone said that there would be concerts and opera that night all over Lisbon's streets and squares. For free and for everyone!

For us it was really funny and unexpected. We got a free concert at our window. We had dinner with live opera in the comfort of our kitchen.
